Have you tried red light therapy, and what have been your results?

This is an experience shared by a Quora member about using infrared therapy lamps.

I tried red light therapy for my heart horse who had completely torn both front leg suspensory ligaments in 1995. 2 Vets had already said to euthanize him. On the advice of my holistic vet I purchased 2 red light therapy wraps and started using them twice a day. Not only did he fully recover, he is now a 40+ year old pasture pony with no lameness.

Since that time we have used Light Therapy (now far more colors than just red) for ourselves, our horses, our dogs and cats and as a full time business. It is easier to list things we don’t use it for. From ache and pains to upset digestion and neuropathy, my go to is Light Therapy - aka photobiomodulation.

This week alone we have used light for:
- waking up with vertigo and a slight ear infection - one treatment with torch - gone
- overeating holiday leftovers - pad over the tummy - gone
- lower back stiffness - used a pad over the back - gone
- knife slice on the finger - blue torch - 2 days - no infection, fully closed
- trigger finger of middle finger nuckle on my right hand - released and working again

So, yes, I have tried it and will always have a variety of tools around.

Some studies of Red Light Therapy

Certainly! Here are some studies on the effectiveness of red light therapy (also known as photobiomodulation) for both humans and animals:

For Humans:

Reduction of Pain and Inflammation in Osteoarthritis

Study: "Efficacy of low-level laser therapy in the management of neck pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized placebo or active-treatment controlled trials."
Journal: The Lancet
Findings: The study concluded that low-level laser therapy, including red light therapy, can significantly reduce pain and improve function in patients with chronic neck pain.

Improvement in Skin Rejuvenation and Wrinkle Reduction

Study: "A prospective, randomized, double-blind, and controlled study on the efficacy of light-emitting diode (LED) phototherapy for skin rejuvenation."
Journal: Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology
Findings: The study demonstrated that red light therapy significantly improved skin complexion, feeling of skin, and collagen density, reducing wrinkles and fine lines.

Muscle Recovery and Performance Enhancement

Study: "Photobiomodulation therapy for the improvement of muscular performance and reduction of muscular fatigue associated with exercise in healthy people: a systematic review and meta-analysis."
Journal: Lasers in Medical Science
Findings: Red light therapy was found to improve muscle recovery and performance post-exercise, aiding in quicker recovery and reduced muscle soreness.

For Animals:

Pain and Inflammation Reduction in Dogs with Osteoarthritis

Study: "Efficacy of low-level laser therapy on pain and inflammation in dogs with osteoarthritis."
Journal: American Journal of Veterinary Research
Findings: This study found that low-level laser therapy, including red light therapy, significantly reduced pain and inflammation in dogs suffering from osteoarthritis.

Wound Healing in Dogs

Study: "Effect of low-level laser therapy on healing of open skin wounds in dogs."
Journal: Journal of Veterinary Science
Findings: The study demonstrated that red light therapy accelerated the healing process of open skin wounds in dogs, promoting faster recovery and improved tissue repair.

Reduction of Muscle Fatigue in Horses

Study: "Photobiomodulation therapy alleviates muscle fatigue in horses: a double-blind, placebo-controlled study."
Journal: Equine Veterinary Journal
Findings: Red light therapy was shown to reduce muscle fatigue in horses, aiding in quicker recovery and enhanced performance.
